Solar activity

Sunspot regions, coronal holes, filaments? In this forum we discuss everything related to the activity on our nearest star.

Solar activity forum rules - Let's keep things tidy!

1. Want to talk about a sunspot region? Feel free to make a topic! Keep the title clean and simple! For example: Sunspot region 1234, or AR1234.
2. Want to discuss a solar flare? Do not make a new topic! Post in the existing topic for that sunspot region or make a new topic if the sunspot region in question does not have a topic yet!
3. Solar flares and sunspot regions on the east limb, and unnumbered regions are discussed in this topic.
4. Returning active region? Make a new topic with the current sunspot region number. Do not revive the old topic for that sunspot region!
5. Want to talk about coronal holes? There is a dedicated topic for that. Do not post a new topic.
6. Want to talk about filaments? There is a dedicated topic for that. Do not post a new topic.
7. Discussions about possible earth-directed coronal mass ejections and the geomagnetic storm that it might cause go in the geomagnetic activity forum.

Is NOAA saying that there will be a grand solar minimum with its prediction of incoming sunspots for SC26? https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/predicted-sunspot-number-and-radio-flux

  2. Started by NEAurora,

Nice M2 eruption. Looks like it accompanied a filament release. I don’t know if there’s anything Earth directed, but at least this was on the right side of the disk! any thoughts?

  3. Started by tniickck,

already a delta, though the group is 1 day old, keep going

  4. i have seen this many times while strong flares and been wondering why this noises happen, what is it associated with? personally i noticed that the smaller flare area is, the stronger are the noises

can today's CME somehow interact with 30 Aug slow one, increasing geomagnetic storm? WSA-ENLIL Solar Wind Prediction | NOAA / NWS Space Weather Prediction Center it looks pretty good

Looks like this region is greeting us from the limb of hope with a C8.99. Hope it keeps producing.

A CME just launched from this guy and I'm not entirely sure if it was from a flare or a small filament snap. (or both) Doesn't look to be very fast or Earth directed (le sigh) but it looked more dense on LASCO than I expected it to. Thoughts?

  9. Started by Cat Perkinton,

Hoping someone can shed light on the huge spikes in solar wind density showing here... I dont recall seeing such a mahoussive swing before, although likely I have just not paid enough attention 🤨-

  11. Started by tniickck,

isnt there a small delta forming? this region appeared less than 48 hours ago and has already grown so much, so if it keeps growing it can be really active (hopefully not like it was with 3376)

  12. Started by tniickck,

it returns again (in the past it was numbered as 3342 and 3363) looks nice tho

Just had an eruptive M1.6 that seems to also have triggered a filament snap. Too early to see it on LASCO yet but looked like a bunch of material got flung out.

didnt it just produce an earth directed CME? it also caused a spike in solar radiation

  15. Started by tniickck,

dont you guys think this storm was caused by both M4.1 flare from 3376 and filament launched at Earth about 11-12 PM UTC 28 Jul? because as I can see the Proton flux went much higher after the filament launched from the Sun. I am just curious, wanna see your opinions

  16. Started by Philalethes,

Is it just me, or does this look like an anti-Hale (reverse polarity) region to anyone else? Last time we saw that it grew very fast and produced some strong flares, but maybe it's too early to tell.

Here's another chance for me to show off the gaps in my knowledge. 🙂 So I was thinking of doing some ham radio operating. I pulled up the flare page and the graph shows no significant flares. Good. Probably little or no blackout. But I scrolled down and see there's a pretty strong blackout in progress: Type II radio emission. Here's where I'm confused. My understanding (apparently wrong) is that Type II radio emissions occur when a large/wide CME launches from the sun's "surface". This is early warning that a CME is coming in a couple of days. How does this affect us now? The CME just left the sun and is not here yet. Blackouts are caused by excessively hig…

this region produced 3 m-flares (including M6.83) on the day of its appearance on visible part of the sun,so it is really worth observation. in addition, it raised the level of background flux

  21. Started by Philalethes,

Does anyone know what is causing the slowly moving/expanding bright outflows currently visible on the coronagrams, particularly on the south-"eastern" part of the disk? There has been some small eruptions around there lately, but it looks to me like there's a steady outflow of some sort (just what it looks like, no idea if that's true at all); maybe I just haven't been paying attention well enough, but I can't recall seeing something that prominent before (then again, maybe I have and maybe it's nothing special at all). Here's from a few hours after it started expanding: And here at its widest and brightest ~7 hours ago: And here the latest: …
