Solar activity

Sunspot regions, coronal holes, filaments? In this forum we discuss everything related to the activity on our nearest star.

Solar activity forum rules - Let's keep things tidy!

1. Want to talk about a sunspot region? Feel free to make a topic! Keep the title clean and simple! For example: Sunspot region 1234, or AR1234.
2. Want to discuss a solar flare? Do not make a new topic! Post in the existing topic for that sunspot region or make a new topic if the sunspot region in question does not have a topic yet!
3. Solar flares and sunspot regions on the east limb, and unnumbered regions are discussed in this topic.
4. Returning active region? Make a new topic with the current sunspot region number. Do not revive the old topic for that sunspot region!
5. Want to talk about coronal holes? There is a dedicated topic for that. Do not post a new topic.
6. Want to talk about filaments? There is a dedicated topic for that. Do not post a new topic.
7. Discussions about possible earth-directed coronal mass ejections and the geomagnetic storm that it might cause go in the geomagnetic activity forum.

  1. Started by Pär Andersson,

I find it odd with this after all activities, and then this corona hole and it seems like its a lot of mass to push sins earlyer

This sunspot looks interesting, Does it have a delta?

  3. This looks scary. Now, SOHO is saying it won't hit Earth, but that is a cataclysmic amount of plasma that erupted this morning.

    New CME from m1.5 flare

  5. Started by Solar_Marcel,

I hope that this region brings us some sun-pyrotechnics-show at new years eve, if i´m not mistaken this bright loop would correspond to newly named AR 3536

  6. Started by LunarLights58,

This one is growing fast and has a delta. I think that makes it beta-gamma-delta

Has anyone been paying attention to the incoming region? Sure looks like a broad area with many areas of interest. Flaring already.

  8. Started by Patrick P.A. Geryl,

Will they again be wrong? in December 2019 they delayed the minimum to April 2020. They were wrong… A formula for the start of a new sunspot cycle | SpringerLink https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10509-020-03800-x Now they delay the maximum.. While I know it already happened… Study still in review… Solar Cycle Progression Updated Prediction (Experimental) | Space Weather Prediction Testbed http://testbed.swpc.noaa.gov/products/solar-cycle-progression-updated-prediction-experimental

  9. Started by Sam Warfel,

I checked on the solar cycle progression page to see how far SC25 has now exceeded the peak of SC24 as measured in yearly flare activity, and I was somewhat surprised to see that not only has it far surpassed the peak of SC24, it has solidly passed the peak of SC23. This surprised me, SC23 was such a generally strong cycle! Of course, this is only one metric, others such as the SSN still have SC25 much lower than the peak of SC23, still in the territory of the peak of SC24. Anyway, I wanted to see if the big nerds knowledgeable folks on here had any reactions to this graph (SC25 exceeding the peak of SC23 in yearly flare counts). Is this a quirk of the data measuring …

  10. Started by Jay-B,

I was wondering if it was possible to see a solar flare during the total solar eclipse with the naked eye if a flare occurs during totality?

  11. Started by chronical,

This sunspot group grabbed my attention today. It has been developing for quite a bit, and now there is getting interesting with 1 or 2 areas that could become more complex. It has also just produced a C7 flare I believe, but I am not 100% sure. Certainly a region to follow. Wish I could upload higher quality images but I don’t know how 😕

  12. Started by MinYoongi,

Don’t know when it formed but I think that region has a delta?

  13. I'm wondering when we will see the sunspot that hit mars a few weeks ago. Shouldn't that area be turning into view soon?

  14. Started by hamateur 1953,

Beta Delta. New kid. Definitely looks good for now. We need a replacement for 3514 anyway, hopefully this guy steps up soon. Keep dissing it. Haha. It seems to be working so far. Hopefully an M class by tomorrow.

  15. Started by arjemma,

I wanted to start a topic about this region as it has become rather interesting. It has fired a few C-class and now have at least a beta-gamma configuration. It has grown in complexity. I'm including a gif of the development the last 2-days (ish). It's the region to the right in the gif.

  16. Started by LunarLights58,

This region may be on the western limb but it released a M4 flare and a big CME. It's not the first region I would have thought to have done so, but it also has been active with C flares.

  17. Started by hamateur 1953,

I recently became more interested in these observations, so yesterday only I took the following latitudes from this sites’ eleven regions. North. 08. North 10 North 17 North 20 and North 22 degrees. South 09 South 13 South 15 South 17 and South 18 (2). Avg latitude North is 15.4. Avg latitude South is 15 degrees. Assuming equatorial proximity is a good indicator of Solar Maximum, this is very good news, and that this bears out over the next few months and my quick calculations are accurate, of course. We still have a way to go with SC 25. Haha. Best wishes to all this coming holiday season btw! Mike/Hagrid.

This Sunspot just produced a C8 Flare. Looking at Suvi 195A i can see dimming, i think. video : https://gyazo.com/029819d1c9b8552de7ef782451cb88c3 The Region as of 14:00 UTC :

Spots are still moving around, but the circled area seemed to be one of the small complex areas so far from what can be made out.

  21. Started by SpaceWeather5464,

This sunspot has developed a lot in the past 48 hours, It could be a flare player if it keeps developing.

This AR seems to have grown quite a bit. I don’t see any intermediate spots, however I think I spot a delta In the trailing positive. I’m lousy at deltas anyway so any help is most welcomed. Mike and Hagrid

  23. Started by Newbie,

This new area has been crackling with activity since yesterday. It’s at least BG. N.

  24. Started by Adrian Kobyłecki,

Will any coronal hole experts comment on what is currently happening? The parameters have just gone up, but I have no idea what will happen next. Someone please explain to me
