If it is partially Earth directed, the speed puts it near a low-mild range.

If it is, I'd guess it will just be a dull shock to complete the halo in differenced imagery, but we will see. 20 minutes ago, MinYoongi said: what do you mean with low-mild range? Impact wise? Umm, I'll just say G2 max at this point and that will likely go down, if it arrives Edited January 15, 2023 by Jesterface23

Jesterface23
I'm not seeing any type of full halo in differenced imagery, but the partial halo is around 180 degrees. (goes back to waiting for any next CME)

No, GOES-U the next generation of the GOES satellite (likely be named GOES-19 after it is operational). It is scheduled for launch on April 30th 2024 and it will carry a coronagraph (CCOR instrument). Newer generation Goes satellites will have it also, or at least it is planned but no certainty. CCOR-1 imagery from the new GOES satellite will be available within 30 minutes after images are taken, compared to up to 8 hours with LASCO.
MinYoongi
wow, thats so great. Near Real time. No shame on Lasco though - its good too ! Just outdated.

That's why we only get imagery in bursts separated by hours, the craft isn't pointed how they wanted it to be, but they can't fix it, at least not without running a serious risk of losing it for good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_and_Heliospheric_Observatory#Near_loss_of_SOHO
Jesterface23
Awesome, if I am reading things correctly we will have 2 new coronagraph imagery satellites come 2025 with SWFO-L1 as well. And DSCOVR is already going to be replaced with that. Edited January 15, 2023 by Jesterface23

So we’ll have a primary and secondary satellite that provides us valuable data. And a better backup also for DSCOVR as ACE is too old and not that reliable, plus the growing amount of hiccups that DSCOVR has. Launch of new sats should be done in solar minimum so they have time to get it all right before activity picks up, now they’ll be launched around solar max when the heat is on, not that ideal.

At least if they have all the bugs worked out before hand, it's worth it. heh
