How can you tell it has an Earth-directed component?

If it is, I'd guess it will just be a dull shock to complete the halo in differenced imagery, but we will see.

what do you mean with low-mild range? Impact wise?

I sadly cant calculate how fast it is.

Umm, I'll just say G2 max at this point and that will likely go down, if it arrives

is it GOES18? Cuz thats already operational!

No, GOES-U the next generation of the GOES satellite (likely be named GOES-19 after it is operational). It is scheduled for launch on April 30th 2024 and it will carry a coronagraph (CCOR instrument). Newer generation Goes satellites will have it also, or at least it is planned but no certainty. CCOR-1 imagery from the new GOES satellite will be available within 30 minutes after images are taken, compared to up to 8 hours with LASCO.

really? i cant find anything on that

It was almost lost, and since then isn't working as planned. That's why we only get imagery in bursts separated by hours, the craft isn't pointed how they wanted it to be, but they can't fix it, at least not without running a serious risk of losing it for good.

Awesome, if I am reading things correctly we will have 2 new coronagraph imagery satellites come 2025 with SWFO-L1 as well. And DSCOVR is already going to be replaced with that.

Unlike GOES the SWFO satellite is at L1 point which would be the best viewpoint. It’s good that they (finally) realised we need coronagraphs. So we’ll have a primary and secondary satellite that provides us valuable data. And a better backup also for DSCOVR as ACE is too old and not that reliable, plus the growing amount of hiccups that DSCOVR has. Launch of new sats should be done in solar minimum so they have time to get it all right before activity picks up, now they’ll be launched around solar max when the heat is on, not that ideal.

At least if they have all the bugs worked out before hand, it's worth it. heh
