It seems that it may have developed on the farside since it has already produced 5x C flares today - compared to only 4x B flares (over 7 days) on last appearance. We know that the AR was initially identified as an H Alpha Plage on 10th January, and developed into a Beta spot on 12th January. Would you count that as being 'born' on the 10th or the 12th? How does that match with the predictions you made for sunspots in January? And when do you think AR2939 was 'born'?

Will see when Jan Alvestad updates for January. NASA can never find the sunspot theory because they list a sunspot sometimes DAYS after it has been BORN! 2939= hard to tell because STEREO isnt working. Depends from reactions on alignments This is a possibility for 2940... farm24
it looks like 2940 is ramping up it has flared quite a few times and is keeping the background flux above a C level
LunarLights58
It produced a high-end C flare too.

LunarLights58
It's nice to see AR 2940 growing, after AR 2936 only managed a low end M flare and a weak CME at its peak.
Sam Warfel
Nice long-duration C9 from 2939! Almost an M1, could launch a decent CME

Sam Warfel
Looks like about 3 hours, could probably have launched a CME. No radio sweeps, so not sure, but the last one (the CME that just hit) didn’t have those either.

So, no CME.

Sam Warfel
No surprise there when it’s been flaring for days and continues to. It does look like it may have shrank some, or at least isn’t growing at all…

Close to center-disk, but it kinda appears to be largely directed eastward. Perhaps the Parker Spiral effect will bring it around. No LASCO footage yet, gotta wait for that… Edited February 6, 2022 by Orneno
