On Monday, May 6, an X4.5 class flare was seen in the Sun. I was photographing The Sun at the observatory of Tampereen Ursa just then. Cloudiness disturbed the observations somewhat, but in the end I was able to create a video just when the flare was at its strongest. I stacked this image from this video. This was the first time for me that I could observe (live) such a powerful flare. The smaller ones are stuck in the camera's memory.

The contrast offered by a double stack is addictive, the impression of flying over the solar surface like so many waves above the tumultuous ocean. 150 mm Halpha refractor with double PST etalon and Apollo IMX 429 camera© Andre cassese
