Guest Juan Gascon
Is it possible to create a powerfull enough artificial magnetic force targeted far enough in the path of an earthbound CME to deflect at least a portion of the most harmful effects (to sattelites or earth) before it actually reaches earth's magnetic field possibly using the two warning sattelites being deployed now as a trigger? Pardon my ignorance if this concept is totally bonkers.
Vancanneyt Sander
That can't be done. First of all we have the radiation storm with particles that are accelerated to the speed of light and you can't catch those with a magnet. The CME itself is a plasma cloud with electrically charged particles and is slower but our magnetic field takes care of that and deflects it. But a major shock would compress the magnetic field so that satellites can be exposed more but this happens rarely (last time some satellites got out of control by extreme geomagnetic storm was in 2003).A CME is a very widespread event where you dan't cut a hole in it to let the earth pass through. Guest Chris Romano
This question is somewhat related... appreciate any insight and especially love your website. Long time listener, first time caller, so to speak. Does the position of Venus, specifically as it appears now and in the coming days during its revolution to be passing between the Earth and Sun, have a discernible effect on the interplanetary magnetic forces observed on Earth? For example, when looking at WSA-Enlil, does Venus crossing "over" (or closest to) the magnetic connection of the Sun and Earth have an effect on the IMF on Earth? I'll take your answer off the air...
Vancanneyt Sander
No planets have no effect on the IMF, it just flows around it like it does with all planets. Compare it to comets where the comet has a tail because the solar wind flows over it and the tail is in that direction. the solar wind just flows past earth and gets deflected by our magnetosphere. Also read our article in the help section about the IMF so you'll understand what the IMF is exactly. Marcel de Bont
Now I think of it, it sort of feelings like we already have some kind of anti-CME shield... so many of them have been blasting of in the wrong directions the past few months! :P
Eieretertje Hayday
Apperently, such shield is not only possible, but was already built. http://motherboard.vice.com/read/earths-plasma-shield-weathers-solar-storms
Guest Harry Twinotter
Apperently, such shield is not only possible, but was already built. http://motherboard.vice.com/read/earths-plasma-shield-weathers-solar-storms Who built it, Mother Nature? It is a natural process.
