I just got the notification that a cm hit earth like that... what just happened?

Mar 12 1900 UTC, a near-side CME was produced by a filament eruption, which arrived at the time of your post. There are other events around it which enhanced geomagnetic storming conditions on Mar 15(today) such as the far-side event. See my comment here, I spent over an hour checking through imagery and verifying this information:
