klaus7
Hi all, sorry for my simple message, but I'm trying to understand something more about aurora. Next week I'll be in Kiruna for some days, but I see the potential kp is 2...๐ญ I'm a little bit worry to not see a good aurora, considering in these days it was always 4-5. I would know first of all if the kp index is a medium over the whole day and also if the potential is 2, banally could reach peak of 4-5. Moreover if the potential is based on statistics os what, given that 1 month before ot was already calculated. Then I downloaded apps, read articles etc, but I would know something more specific about aurora in kiruna/abisko and closed villaged. I see the live webcam in Abisko aurora station, but if you could suggest me the most reliable apps/website where to check forecast, set notification, etc, I would be very glad. Many thanks! Solution Popular Post Vancanneyt Sander Posted November 29, 2022 Solution Popular Post Share Posted November 29, 2022 Kiruna is situated below the Van Allen belt, so the moment Bz drops a littlebit south you'll already see the northern lights there ๐ย Don't blindly watch Kp, it's a forecast and forecasts can be incorrect! Plus the day itself, the Kp index is the Kp of the last three hour period (unless threshold has been reached). Since you're going to Kiruna, it has it's own magnetometer station! We have that one on the site and app too, so the moment the deflection in the magnetometer grows you'll see the lights (simply said ย ) No need to install other apps than SpaceWeatherLive (bit of self promoting ), all you need is to check direction of the IMF (Bz), is it southward for a longer period of time? Than the odds are good, then check Kiruna magnetometer and if there's a deflection (the more negative the better) you'll run outside and look up ๐ย
