Yak
This image confused me for 1 second. What is occurring here as it surely not a massive coronal hole.

No it's not a coronal hole. Something has either covered part of the camera or moved in front of the camera and eclipsed the view of the sun. Latest CH pics look normal. N. KW2P
This happens from time to time when SDO passes behind Earth and the sun is eclipsed by Earth.

Also when it does a small maneuver the camera sometimes "shakes" distorting the pictures. no need to worry.
Yak
I didn't seriously think it was a coronal hole, just for 1 second I was really confused! Edited July 25, 2022 by Yak

Yak
I wonder how this would effect earth if it happened!
Sam Warfel
I’m not sure if there is a connection between coronal hole size and HSS speed. However, it would probably mean the sun is dying or something, and that would not be good for earth.
Solution Kaimbridge Posted July 26, 2022 Solution Share Posted July 26, 2022 (edited) Don’t get nervous...just the solar eclipse season. From SpaceWeather.com : Quote SOLAR ECLIPSE SEASON IN SPACE: Eclipse season for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has begun. Every day for the next three weeks, around 0730 UT, Earth will pass between SDO and the sun, producing images that look like this. This is a twice-a-year event for SDO caused by the alignment of the sun and Earth as seen from the spacecraft's geosynchronous orbit.
