First M flare in 2022

I believe this is region 2918, just as it is about to turn away, it gave us the first M class flare of the new year (at least in UTC).

it would be nice if the first decent geomagnetic storm happens in the spring because in the winter we get like 1 clear night for 50 cloudy nights making astrophotography pretty much impossible

I feel that way too, especially with how winters are trending towards warm and cloudy around here.
Back in the day they used to be clear, sunny, cold, and snowy.
