Tim Stone
Yesterday, 15 February 2021 20:00 UT there was an interesting magnetic event. I recorded it on my magnetometer and my reading exactly matched USGS Boulder and USGS Fredericksburg readings. Coincident with an abrupt drop in the solar wind density, the magnetic field oscillated at relatively high frequency and amplitude for 15-30 minutes. I think I understand what happened. The sudden change solar wind pressure on the magnetic field caused it to rebound like a plucked string, ringing until it reached its new equilibrium. Am I thinking about this correctly? Vancanneyt Sander
What happened last night is the effects of a coronal hole solar wind stream that affected the Earth. The interplanetary magnetic field was southward directed for several hours which lead to active geomagnetic conditions. Nothing out of the ordinary 🙂
