There's a new sunspot group on the far side, and one M3 gave out yesterday.

Been slowly making a simple NE limb video and finally decided to finish it last night as JSOC will be down for 6 hours for maintenance to fix data gaps.

At first I thought when I saw the message that it was AR3664 again, but the eastern limb is even better.

It's position looks like it's going to be prime once it reaches the center disk!

Because of its Longitute?

NOAA says it could possibly be the old region 3655.

If i remember right you used to post radio velocity stuff on twitter and very pretty sdo-videos :) i miss it

how occulted is this flare? I think i got explained by marcel and sander once that eastern limb flares are usually not that occulted since we can see the loops good.

In my opinion I don't think it was occulted at all. We can see much smaller activity from that region right now.

It's latitude is very close to the sun earth line. Longitude wise, it's got a ways to go

It was a bit occulted, because you can't see a lot activity on the photosphere in AIA 1700. Also judging by the delay between the brigthness increase in AIA 94/131 and the post-flare arcade in 304.

Personally I don't think it was occulted at all tbh, I'll be willing to give it a X3.0 rating instead of 2.99 at most 😅

I agree, and i also think we can see some of its spots already.

On a side note, maybe someone can answer my question. (yes, i already checked the FAQ and found a *similar* question but it did not really answer my question)  : What causes flares like this to go down in such a slow manner? I know its not unusual, but i never really asked myself the question before today. Some flares are super impulsive and go down as quickly as up, but some just take forever. Is it the Post-Flare Arcades "glowing" and emitting stuff afterwards?

based on the fact that each flare is getting stronger, I conclude that the region continues to grow. One more g4 storm please

If the sunspot number average is continuing to grow, and historically the strongest storms are after that number begins to decline, would it be a safe bet to assume that there are a few brighter nights ahead?

Now any aurora visible from my country would make me happy. I have a few days left before the white nights appear and then there will be no ideal conditions for observations until July 18.

I still have not seen any auroras this cycle. They are pretty rare where I am, so of course the one time we get a G5 storm it rained all night.

Good question. Would like to learn about this more, too.

Taking a look, this is a brand new region that formed at some point on the far side.

Have you looked at GONG or JSOC Farside imagery for that? I do think i saw some SolO pictures on twitter with the caption that this is a recurring region. if youre interested, i could dig it out for you :)
