Is there anything unique about this solar cycle? 19 x-flares and we’re only in May. I’ve been trying to find what’s typical for solar maximum and I’d love to know what year (that we know of) hold the record for most solar flares, and how many. 
 

 

Not unique, just normal solar max conditions  on the site/app you can find the solar cycle progression page where you have some nice graphs of geomagnetic activity and solar activity throughout the years and this episode is in comparison to other solar max periods average.

There's not really a standard for solar cycles to make this one more or less unique since they're all so different and we're still learning so much about them.

All you can really say is solar max = more flares/stronger flares

Complex sunspot region = more flares/stronger flares, but not even that's always true.
