Aurora Nov 3rd

Aurora Nov 3rd

Album created by Sam Warfel · Updated

Dim Aurora visible in long-exposure photograph during the G3 storm yesterday, from Southern WI near Middleton.  Despite bright town lights right at due north, the green glow is visible, as well as telltale backlighting of the clouds to the right of the telephone pole.
A bit underwhelming, but this still constitutes my first-ever photography of the Aurora.

Nice stuff! I'm actually very near you, in Sun Prairie. I got some good shots from that night as well.

You’re in Sun Prairie? No way! Small world 🤣

What time that night did you get your excellent shots? Based on the imf data I’m guessing after 11:30-midnight local time

Small world indeed! It started getting the most interesting right around and after 11 PM, which is in line with the data you mentioned. Some low level displays began before then. I really wish those clouds didnt come in because the storm peaked after midnight, and by then it was overcast!

Yeah, the northern clouds were rough that night. I didn’t stay out past like 10-10:30 sadly, I got carsick. But, I did manage to capture the glow from an Aurora in the long-exposure photograph, as seen here.
Lesson learned not to give up and go home too soon, and probably not to bring people with early immovable bedtimes with me. 😂

Bummer about the carsickness! That's never fun to deal with. Glad you got to see at least a little bit of it though. Yeah, that's the thing with auroras... they don't wait up for anyone! Sometimes, you'll be up most of the night waiting. Othertimes, you might be luckier.

I have a few of my best shots from the night posted to an album, if you'd like to see (if you haven't already)

I’ll go check those out!

Edit:
I only see the three images from Nov 4th.

I did comment on the album and maybe one of the images as well!

Yep, just those three images. I took several more, but only included the best ones of the night. Glad you got to see them!

Good photos! (as I think I said over there too)
