  1. That’s NOAA SWPC, not SIDC. Likely SIDC need to do adjustments to get it back running
  2. SIDC hasn’t updated the coronagraph imagery and detections since May 3rd
  3. Well… somebody accessed the archive too early, and that way that page/data was cached for more than a day by our CDN. Our archive gets filled during the first hour after midnight UTC, so when a user already tries to visit it shortly after midnight, data isn’t available yet and returns that error, but as the cache lifetime in an archive is long you’ll even see that error even after it has been filled. If you acces the same page in an other language, for example Dutch, it will show the data 😇
  4. Gamma is indeed incorrect as it is very easy to draw a line between the polarities. So it’s more beta-delta.
  5. It looked indeed better yesterday but still a very nice magnetic layout with plenty of delta's
  6. There’s a spot in the hardly attached penumbral area with opposite polarity
  7. Well that’s also available on our sunspot regions page 😉
  8. Introducing archive calendar viewing modes! A short while ago someone on the forum made a good comment about searching for days with solar radiation storms and that got us thinking how we could improve our archive for that. Until today on the archive calendar view we had below each days two values: max solar flare for that day and the finalized Kp. Adding extra values would make it not readable anymore. Plus the downside also was that on a mobile device you couldn't even see these values as the screen width was too small to display both values. So today we are announcing viewing modes for the archive calendar view to make browsing the archive more convenient. To start we have three different calendar views: Kp, Solar flares and Solar radiation storms. More views could be added in the future, based on archived data, we're open for suggestions. Below the calendar you can switch between the three modes, Kp will be the default one. On mobile devices it will be a lot more easier to view the interesting days. When you browse the archive it will show the selected view mode so you can quickly find interesting days, found a date you like just click on the day to open the archive of that day with plenty more data to crunch on. As an example here's how March 2024 looks with the three viewing modes:
  9. Like I said “simple said” 😜 there is more depth to it but I won’t go into that. In this case it isn’t just a spot in penumbral area, both polarity’s umbrae form a line and is squashed against each other along the line making it a very explosive region and thus strong shear.
  10. Simple said: When a delta spot is squashed against another spot of opposite polarity shear increases.
  11. Damn 😍 ticking timebomb indeed, what a delta with strong magnetic shear it seems. It must give some nice fireworks…
  12. Not even halo visible in LASCO imagery so I don’t believe it will have an impact.
  13. Bz has been southward since this morning with only a brief moment northward. Because field was already southward before impact, the field was unsettled. When Bz is southward for a very long time and with values around -17nT a G3 is possible, even with low solar wind speed. ps: you don’t often need strong solar flares with strong CME’s to have a strong storm 😉
  14. Official statement: SWPC is currently experiencing an unplanned network outage. Real time data stopped updating at ~01/0821 UTC. Routine products and services will experience interruptions until the issue is resolved.
  15. There seems to be an issue with data coming from both satellites. Should restore itself when SWPC has found the cause of the disruption.
