Alternate Community Pages

New here and wanted to throw this out there, not sure if it’s already been suggested but have the community leaders thought of setting up a Discord server in order to use in the case of extreme traffic like this past weekend. I know the forums were down for a little for performance sake but I think it would be a good idea to have an alternate area to converse in times like that so people can continue the conversation. Just a thought, I’ve been enjoying everyone’s comments about the solar storm and all the pictures I’ve seen!

it was already difficult keeping up with the forum and our social media channels 🙈

not so familiar with discord though

I didn’t know there were other social pages I’ll check them out. As far as discord goes it acts like an in between of forum and instant messaging. Their servers can be set up by topics and chats are logged in each channel, and you can use them more as instant communication.

While i really like discord, it would defeat the purpose of having a forum. you either have a discord to discuss/talk about stuff, or a forum. both would make one obsolete.

I also like Discord and while it would be good for news as you can ping so many people with commands, it would indeed defeat the purpose of the forums and take traffic away even during more quiet times. What happened yesterday was astounding, our servers do not buckle quickly trust me, there were an insane amount of visitors online. I think its better to take the forums offline once every 10 years or so than to start splitting traffic to Discord and away from the server. Who knows, @Vancanneyt Sander might invest in even heavier servers or optimize even more, I have no idea. We will analyze what happened this weekend that is for sure but the traffic we got was out of this world.

That makes sense, being new here I wasn’t sure what things have been like normally and during other events. Seems like it did well for the most part. Also went ahead and followed the twitter and downloaded the app! Even if the ad-free to help support. Love the community here and appreciate what y’all do, allowed me to experience the event this weekend with my family and take some cool pictures!
