AR2993/AR2994...another return...or another dud?

Recommended Posts

Yes I know this is early to make a topic about this again... but the sunspots look to be going strong again. Now for those who don't know about this region go check out "AR2975, M9 flare" and "AR2993/2994: X flare!" for info. Anyways... for those who know about this region, if you guys look on here: https://www.raben.com/maps/date/ (farside) they are there and also here http://jsoc.stanford.edu/data/farside/. Now I understand that this can just be faculae, but hey, you never know. I also read something on twitter (or Fwitter (like fear but- never mind) as i like to call it) that these regions are active again. So if this is the case we may have round three of activity, or if it survives once again..

But for now, we just wait and watch.

So this is the second time this region has returned?

No this is the third time it has returned. I said it at the beginning in case you didn't see it 😊

No significant changes in size for the last 24h. I dont know about cme activity or anything to base its activity off, but it not shrinking could be a good sign?:)

Ehh, not if it’s a simple spot, some of the biggest this SC so far were alphas that don’t flare

Do you mean the ones we already discussed in this forum? If yes, they decayed only like a day before turning onto the limb/disc.

AR 2993/AR2994 may be active again!

Quote

Farsided activity looks to be quite active with a nice coronal mass ejection (CME) observed in coronagraph imagery today. The source of this event may have been old active regions 2993/2994, now about 3 days away from turning back into view on the east limb.

UPDATE: It should be noted that another possible region in the southern hemisphere also appears to be active and is a few days away from the east limb as well.

Look here: http://jsoc.stanford.edu/data/farside/

They seem to be the only one back there but there could be another small region or this could be faculae... I am not going to get my hopes up yet.

That's what ive been saying. the South Region isnt on nay farside map, yet its visible on Stereo Already.

I do think it was the south region responsible for the CME btw, @Calder and me talked about it in the incoming regions thread, i caught its launch.

Is the farside region that may be 2994/2993 that you've been monitoring?  It looks quite large.

I posted about this in "incoming regions" ! I posted another picture and asked if those pictures make stuff look better/bigger.

Also, it wasnt much smaller last time it returned (i checked)

Yeah, this wavelength does indeed greatly exaggerate the size of ARs

is that SDO or Stereo

He said the limb on STEREO

Plus you can tell it’s STEREO and not SDO due to the low resolution and the placement and content of the text on the images

Also, SDO doesn’t have colors that look quite like those

The one i talked about is in fact SDO. there were alot of Stereo Images, but the one i qouted is SDO. I checked myself when i started the PC an hour later :D

You meant the first one? Ah yeah that one is, sorry, I’m not used to seeing that wavelength from SDO often

It definitely looks sizeable on both "HMI Intensity" and "HMI Magnetogram" on SolarHam.net, but I don't know if that equates to whether or not it'll actually spit out decent flares and CMEs.

Well, size does not matter as Orneno likes to say. It seems to have calmed down and as far as farside imagery is to be trusted, it shrank and lost complexity. It has not fired off anything after the M1 Flare so thats another argument.

But we need to wait for it to turn around the limb fully and also things can change.

The first one is indeed from SDO, because you also could see that it appears bright there, the others are STEREO.

The limb is still appearing to be bright, now it also can be seen from both GOES 16 and 17. Maybe there is something behind the spots we already see?
