Y class Solar Flares

This is new to me! Highest classification of Solar flares is now 'Y'  😃

That is interesting and I did some searching. I'm not 100% sure, but the page might go back to 2013.

I'm assuming the first value for A (<10^-8) is what we know as a0 to a9.

Hmm 🤔 never seen that, not even during the several extreme solar flares of the Halloween storms. In that time it sometimes was called “Super X-class X17” but never the Y (not used by SWPC or in research papers). Well see if it gets adapted by SWPC as well before we do it as well on SWL

In my honest opinion I don’t like it calling the big ones Y. Y1,2 just sounds tiny, X11,2 sounds massive. Also it doesn’t sound catchy “why 1”. Let’s stay with a super X-class 😇

Ps: it only gets “catchy” when u put it in a song, only the order is wrong 😜: “It's fun to stay at the YMCX”

Hehe you could stay at the other place too! The one with the 'A' in it, that would be in descending order too. Just misses the X factor though... (and B)

Y flares must be an Aussie invention, like vegemite  😜

Y... U Gotta do Aussie's like that 😅

For similar reasons that X100 sounds big, I feel that Y class flares ought to be reserved for some much greater order of magnitude of flare than our Sun could possibly produce - something estimated from afar on volatile, large stars.
