Nice new feature - Sunspot Archive

I just discovered the new 'Info'button on the Sunspot region Archive. That is really helpful - thanks.

I found it particularly interesting, to see how regions 2847 and 2849 merged over the last few days. Region 2847 appears to have jumped by 10 degrees latitude yesterday. Looking at the SWPC Synoptic map it seems to be a real shift.

Yes I agree, there is so much of interest that Sander Vancanneyt and Marcel de Bont have put together on this website. I have found hidden gems of information after opening the tabs and scrolling through the drop down menus. Plus there are  links to a lot of other great sites as well. They have done a great job.

I suspect this was an "ooopsie" which lists the location of AR2847 on 23-Jul-2021 as S38E28.  The SWPC Solar Region Summary text file may be the source, having some location data that doesn't correspond to the Synoptic map.

It confuses the picture, but I don't think AR2847 and AR2849 merged.  AR2849 simply devolved into a plage region devoid of sunspots while AR2847 remains with sunspots.

This is why I thought they merged:

Date    2847 location  2849 location

20th        29/74

21st         27/61           18/75

22nd      28/47            18/61

23rd      (38)/47          20/46

24th      27/24             27/25

25th       27/09            27/07

2849 has now woken up again, but even though they are very close, they are two distinct regions..

It's been there a long time 🙂 Each sunspot region has it's own page with an overview of the region day by day and it's top flares. Images are only available since 2016 if I'm correct. So if you browse our archive and look on the sunspot regions of a specific day you can easily go into the detail of the region.

Indeed, sometimes SWPC makes mistakes and they don't correct them unfortunately. We've done edits many times, not only with sunspot regions but also with solar flares. It was a great hustle to make our own databases with a more correct information 😄 I've edited the region in our own database so it's correct 🙂 If you find any more in the future or on past dates, let us know because we don't see everything 😛

Thanks.  I really appreciate all the effort that you put into making this a really useful website.

Yes!... and we even did this by hand for some historic regions like https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/solar-activity/region/10486.html
