MinYoongi
Hey lovely Friends. I just found a CME right in the happening, I believe. Is this one earth directed? It looks massive and im a bit scared. Please dont get me wrong, im still New to spaceweather and fearmongering is really present in our Community. 😕 Nevertheless i really want to learn how to determine if something is earth bound or not
Christopher S.
It's pretty weak and on the far side of the Sun. Confirmation of this can be found here: https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/reports/forecast-discussion The forecast has yet to reflect this CME, but based on LASCO imagery, SDO, and WSA-Enlil model it will not interact with Earth. Jesterface23
It looks like it was another filament that was visible in solar imagery several days back. The Sun's rotation now has the filament over the western limb, the right side of the Sun from our view, so there's not a chance of the CME having an Earth impact. To know if a CME is directed at Earth there is that first step of determining where the CME originated from looking at solar imagery to see if it is on our side of the Sun. The next step is to look at SOHO LASCO's C2 or C3 coronagraph imagery. It may take several hours before SOHO's latest imagery comes in in real time. Google CME Halo images and that is what you will be looking for in coronagraph imagery. Though, if the CME originated on either limb and has a halo it can be hard to tell if it is coming our way, away from us, or both.
Marcel de Bont
To learn more about how to detect earth-directed CMEs please consult: https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/help/how-do-we-know-if-a-cme-is-earth-directed-and-when-it-s-going-to-arrive You need to specify which event you are talking about with the help of a time and date. There is a CME visible today on STEREO and SOHO but it comes from an event just behind the western limb and 100% will not impact Earth. Like all other space weather events, nothing to be scared about. We are protected by our magnetic field and it has been doing a great job for more than 3 billion years. Keep that in mind the next time you are scared. 👍
